Coaching

General

Athletes registered with Girraween Little Athletics and in 7’s or above are eligible for free coaching sessions provided at CV Kelly Park during the athletics season.

If you are serious about your athletics and want to do well at the representative carnivals and on Friday nights you need to start training early. To do well at these events you must train regularly.

Summer coaching is on Monday and Wednesday nights at 5.45pm.

The first 2-4 weeks of training focuses on fitness plus new events for age groups.

After the first 2 weeks training is split into 2 sessions: 6pm and 7pm. You can stay for one or both sessions. The dual session idea is that athletes can choose to train in up to 2 disciplines per evening. Please note that high jump and race walks(for older experienced kids) may be run over the 2 sessions ie run for approx 1.5hrs.

It is important that your child/children should arrive with sufficient time to run at least two laps of the oval before warmup drills start at 5.454pm. Late comers are still required to complete two laps.

Coaching is available in the following events:

  • sprints
  • blocks training (sprints)
  • race walking
  • middle distance running
  • long jump
  • triple jump
  • high jump (double session)
  • discus
  • shot put

Coaching will not be available in every discipline on each night. It will be subject to a number of conditions including the availability of coaches, weather conditions and demand from attending athletes.

After the Christmas break coaching will be for region qualified athletes only.

Athletes are REQUIRED to wear the compulsory pink training singlet or shirt that displays our club sponsors. Blue club singlets or plain clothes are not to be worn. The pink singlet can be purchased on Monday and Wednesday nights during training.

For the safety of all athletes children are not to wear running spikes until instructed to place them on by the sprints coach.

A parent or guardian is required to be in attendance at the ground in case of poor weather, an early finish, the requirement of medical attention or discipline for their child. Children who attend without a parent or guardian may be excluded from coaching.
